More than 200 tuna purse seine and longline vessels carry EM systems while operating in both national and international waters of the Indian Ocean. These vessels carry flags of some 23 different nations. Purposes of EM in the region include compliance, bycatch monitoring and labor conditions monitoring. The longline fishery is undergoing a Fisheries Improvement Plan.
