We’re pleased to announce a new addition to our Resource Library, an EM and ET glossary developed by the ICES Working Group on Technology Integration for Fishery-Dependent Data. As Helen Holah, one of the group’s co-chairs points out below, the need for standardized terms is growing, and your feedback and suggestions are welcome.
“EM applications and the regulatory landscapes in which they operate are diverse. This can cause miscommunication, slow collaboration, and hinder adoption when technologies and concepts are not clearly understood. Without standardised terminology, emerging technologies such as EM risk fragmentation, inefficiency, and mistrust, delaying both their development and acceptance.
“Since it’s formation in 2019 the Working Group on Technology Integration for Fishery-dependent Data (WGTIFD) has had a term of reference to define a consistent vocabulary across monitoring technologies. The value of standardised terminology has grown as EM has scaled across regions and multi-jurisdictional management structures (e.g., RFMOs, ICES). This need is further heightened by the rapid evolution of EM technologies, which are becoming increasingly complex and multidisciplinary (e.g., through integration with AI/ML). As the WG enters its seventh year, it has sought to expand the visibility and utility of its outputs and has identified EM4Fish as the ideal platform to host its live glossary. The glossary will be updated annually following each WGTIFD meeting, and users are encouraged to contact the chairs with feedback or suggestions for inclusion in the next iteration.”
