OVERVIEW
The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) pioneers collaborative solutions to global ocean challenges. Each year, we serve over 25,000 stakeholders from Cape Cod to Nova Scotia.
For the past 4 years we have been dedicated to working on the design, testing and implementation of a fisheries monitoring solution known as electronic monitoring (EM) for the New England Groundfish fleet. Electronic monitoring is an innovative and cost-effective alternative to at-sea monitoring. It replaces the on-board human observer with a suite of video cameras, computers, gear sensors, and GPS to record information about a vessel’s fishing activity. The video footage is reviewed onshore and can be used to collect data comparable to that collected by at-sea monitors. For example, managers can calculate catch and discard rates using species identification and fish length data captured by the video.
We are in search of a project manager to assist in our EM efforts. The position will be responsible for day-to-day operations of select EM efforts as well as management and strategic guidance.
RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS FOR SELECT EM EFFORTS
- Manage the day-to-day operations of an EM project
- Manage the Budget
- Recruit fishermen participation as necessary
- Coordinate data collection, transfer, review and timely delivery with all stakeholders and project partners, including fishermen, NOAA, States, and NGOs
- Act as a liaison between industry partners and all other stakeholders
- Oversee video review staff
This position will be part of GMRI’s Community team and will therefore assist towards all community initiatives as time allows.
