Seafood and Fisheries Emerging Technologies (SAFET) is beginning the process of organizing the Electronic Monitoring Community: Asia Pacific (EMCAP), a cross-sector community of practice and innovation comprised of industry, technology developers, NGOs, and fishery managers that will meet on a regular basis to advance the adoption of EM systems and standards in the region.
“What we’ve heard quite clearly is that fisheries stakeholders across the Asia-Pacific would really welcome shared conversations around EM program design and implementation,” said Janelle Hangen, interim managing director at SAFET. “Most people we talk to understand that EM is the direction things are moving, but they still have a lot of questions. So our aim is to help demystify EM by creating an active forum for information sharing, and a knowledge base that Asia-Pacific stakeholders can draw from as they refine their fishery management practices.”
