Biography
Mike has worked as a field technician for the Pfleger institute of Environmental Research (PIER) for over four years. He aids in the mission of advancing sustainable fisheries management and public education through applied field research, primarily by executing the hands-on field components of the many studies carried out by PIER. PIER began its work on EM technologies in 2020 as an exploration of the available monitoring alternatives that can help advance the southern California deep-set fishery for swordfish, which PIER has developed over the past decade. Mike has the role of deploying experimental EM systems on commercial vessels in the fleet, and as a result has gained a firsthand understanding of the changing attitudes and perspectives towards technologies such as EM from those that are impacted the most.
