Nautical Crime Investigation Services (NCIS) provides technological solutions for national security and maritime defense. This includes use of artificial intelligence and tracking technologies for risk assessment and detection of crimes at sea and on land. Their goal is to increase transparency, accountability, protection of human rights and due process in crime detection.
NCIS has a project under way, designing a communication tool for fishermen. This tool would allow users to report vessels committing maritime crimes such as catching prohibited species or infringing upon restricted zones.
For this project, NCIS is seeking stakeholders such as artisanal fishermen or maritime law experts to participate in interviews, in order to obtain opinions on the design of this tool. This is in order to optimize the user experience when using the app, and to properly represent often underrepresented communities such as small-scale fishermen. Images shown areĀ wireframe designs further illustrating the idea of the project.
If your network includes artisanal fishermen or maritime law experts, please share this article with them. And if you are willing to participate in this ongoing research, please reach out to Olivia Lam, the student researcher conducting this project, at olivia.lam@alumni.ubc.ca. Thank you!
